XXX Sonnets feeds the first lines of each of Shakespeare’s 154 sonnets into the Pornhub search bar – and pixellates the results. Shakespeare’s sequence, after all, was full of flawed lovers. ‘XXX Sonnets’ emulates the poor or corrupted images used in the works of Picabia and Gerhard Richter; as the critic Craig Dworkin wrote of Thomas Ruff’s giant porn jpeg blow-ups: “Ruff seems to be saying that on the web, porn up close and enlarged is nothing more than a pile of pixels; an illusion.” ‘XXX Sonnets’ sits firmly within the form’s tradition of unrequited love.
ANTI-SONNETS comprised the creation of one sonnet per day over a year, irrespective of personal circumstance. Each sonnet’s subject matter, and perhaps also the perceived quality of its artistic execution, would reflect the tribulations of daily life. ANTI-SONNETS aimed to challenge assumptions associated with the sonnet form, and to champion the ascendency of context over content. XXX SONNETS is part of the extended fall-out..
